If sports contests are narrative, then Seattle-based sports photographer Rod Mar a master of storytelling.

With two decades as the lead sports photographer for the Seattle Times, Mar came to know the games, the players, the fans and the love for drama and competition that brought them together.

He has covered the Superbowl, the NBA finals, the Olympic Games, the NCAA Final Four, golf’s U.S. Open and PGA Championships. He has photographed the greatest athletes of our time, including Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan and the Dalai Lama (big hitter, the Lama).

And while newspapers struggle to find their way in the online world, Mar is forging a path that bridges his experience with the future by continuing his commitment to the integrity of journalism’s past while using the new tools of the future.

He was one of the first in the Seattle Times newsroom to pair audio storytelling with imagery in 2005 as the Seattle Seahawks made their historic run for the Superbowl. He followed the success of those first efforts with an audio slideshow of the Seattle Mariners Opening Day and the subsequent launch of his blog. Named Best Seat in the House, the blog is part journal of life on the road, part musings on ethics in photojournalism and part classroom in photography.

Mar is a sought-after lecturer at photojournalism workshops and has presented his work at universities and professional workshops across the continental United States and in Canada.

When Mar isn't taking pictures, he can be found officiating small college and high school basketball, golfing and volunteering at Lake Forest Park Elementary School. He lives in Seattle with his beautiful wife, two children and beagle, Rosie.

Look for his work in the Seattle Times, his blog and more groundbreaking multimedia in the days to come and at this summer's Olympic Games in Beijing.
